Nine digits, three parts
What a NIF looks like, and what each part means.
The first digit: who holds it
A person, a company or another kind of entity. Some prefixes use two digits.
Seven digits: the number itself
Given in order when the number is issued. They say nothing about you: no name, no date of birth.
The last digit: a check
Computed from the eight digits before it. A single typing mistake makes the number invalid.

03Why do I sign a power of attorney?Documents
It allows us to apply for your NIF on your behalf at the Finanças. You sign it online, in a few minutes. There is nothing to print and nothing to post.
04Do I need a fiscal representative?Documents
It depends on where you live and what you need the NIF for. When we call you back, we tell you whether you need one and what our offer includes.
05How long does it take?The process
A few days once we have your signed power of attorney and your documents. We send you your NIF by email.

07Is the NIF free?Price
Yes. The Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira issues it free of charge, and you can apply yourself at a Finanças office in Portugal. Our price covers the service of doing it for you.
